In southern gospel music, groups come and groups go. Not often do you see one that has stood the test of time like Providence has. This ministry actually began when Marcia was only 6 years old and began singing in her home church. As word spread of her singing, calls soon began coming in from neighboring churches. Two years later, Marcia's younger sister, Peggy, joined her on stage and the "group" was born. The year was 1967. The current group consists of husband/wife duo, Ray and Marcia Wall, and Phillip Hamrick. Ray remembers a quote: "It's not about performance; it's about proclaiming that Jesus Christ is who He says He is." Please don't misunderstand that statement... We believe that we should strive to do the very best that our God given talent will allow us to do! 2nd Tim. 2:15. Then, it's up to God to bless our efforts. He doesn't NEED us, but we are so grateful that HE allows us to be a part of HIS great plan!
Marcia is the only "original" member of Providence. She was born and still resides in Shelby, NC. Growing up in a Christian home and being saved at an early age, she felt the call to sing on her life. She began singing at the age of 6 in her home church. Two years later, her sister Peggy joined her on stage, and as they say, "the rest is history"! Marcia married Ray, the love of her life, in December of 1977. Over the years, God has blessed their marriage and ministry and is still blessing them today! Marcia's joy and enthusiasm is contagious as she shares the old, old story of Jesus! She feels so blessed to be able to minister to those who may be hurting, or in need of our Savior. Marcia and Ray have one daughter, Casey, who teaches chorus at a local middle school. Casey is married to Nathan, and they have two beautiful daughters, Mya Grace, and Lilly Hope. While at home, Marcia enjoys reading and sitting on the beach admiring God's handiwork. Her "favorite" pastime is spending time with her granddaughters. She thoroughly enjoys spoiling them every chance she gets! One of her favorite Bible verses is: Romans 8:28: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
Phillip is the newest addition to Providence. He is a native of Shelby, NC. He has been around gospel music his entire life. His Dad served as minister of music in a local church in the area for years. Phillip came to know The Lord at 6 years of age. He loves this music and began doing limited solo engagements in 1997. Phillip is a fine Christian young man who loves the Lord. His love for God's people shows in his professional and everyday life. Phillip is married to Gina, his soulmate, who keeps him straight as best she can! They have a beautiful daughter named Paxton. One of the happiest times of their lives was the day that Paxton accepted Christ as her Savior and later was baptized. Phillip's responsibilities while on the road include helping to set up the sound equipment, the product table, assist with the driving, and to cue the band. Phillip enjoys having fun, playing golf, and his favorite past time is singingthis "Good Ole Gospel music!" Ray and Marcia feel blessed to share the stage with this young man and to have his family a part of this ministry. One of Phillip's favorite Bible verses is: 2nd Timothy 2:15: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Ray was born in Charlotte, NC and grew up a PK (Preacher's Kid). His earliest memories of southern gospel music are of all night Easter sings at the Charlotte Coliseum, where he heard such groups as The Statesmen, The Oak Ridge Quartet, and The Blackwood Brothers. Years later, his love for this music grew when groups came to the church where his Dad was Pastor. Ray was saved at his home church at the age of eight. His musical journey began at the age of 15, when he joined a regional group as their drummer. His dream was fully realized in December of 1977, when he and Marcia were married. At that time, he became a member of Providence, and still enjoys traveling today! Ray and Marcia had to really put their faith into practice when Ray had some medical battles in 2005. But through it all, GOD is so GOOD! Ray enjoys managing the group, taking care of the bus, sound equipment, and does most of the driving. He loves the Lord with all of his heart, which is evident in his testimony, his daily life, and any time he is on stage. He loves his granddaughters named Mya and Lilly. He also enjoys woodworking and listening to Gospel music. One of his favorite Bible verses is Phillippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
